Climate and Site as the Starting Point
Every Smarthitect project begins with an understanding of how water behaves on the site. In Phuket, this often means dealing with rapid downhill runoff from higher ground, localized ponding in low-lying areas, and delayed discharge caused by tidal influence near the coast. Through early site analysis, we evaluate existing contours, natural flow paths, soil conditions, and connections to public drainage. Buildings are positioned to avoid natural runoff corridors, and site layouts are shaped to work with, rather than against, the island’s hydrological patterns. This terrain-responsive planning reduces flood risk before architectural form is even finalized.
Building Elevation and Defensive Architecture

We design finished floor levels that sit safely above anticipated surface water during intense rain events. These systems are designed to handle intense, short-term rainfall peaks typical of Phuket’s monsoon climate. Where possible, discharge is delayed rather than immediate, reducing pressure on public drains during storm events.
